Who we are

Wanda Vargas

I am an Afro-Latina cis-gender woman, daughter, sister, partner, mother, lifelong learner, and fiercely loving friend. For my entire career, I have been dedicated to breaking the cycle of intergenerational trauma for those often marginalized. I have over 15 years of clinical experience providing high quality care for young children and families of color that have been exposed to trauma.
I earned a Ph.D. in the combined Clinical and School Psychology program at Hofstra University, where an interest in maternal stress and mother-child dyads developed. I later began working clinically with the underserved population of Latinx young children and their caregivers exposed to trauma in Washington Heights and Inwood in NYC. Serving this community is a source of pride, as it is where I was raised as a 3-year-old immigrant from the Dominican Republic.
Over the years, my passion for working with families has grown into a dedication and commitment to effect change both directly and on a systemic level. As the Clinical Director for a community-based mental health program, I’ve worked to co-create a trauma-informed paradigm that is rooted in anti-oppression principles and social justice, offers culturally attuned healing services to the community, and honors culture as a form of resilience and liberation. In recent years I have further enhanced and promoted this socially just trauma-informed paradigm on a national scale by sharing best practices at national and international conferences.
